My name is Jason Horowitz and this is my blog. So-ooo, what else is new?
A little over a month ago, my job was eliminated by my employer of ten years, Sun Microsystems, Inc. In part, this blog will be about a midlife career change; though I can’t pretend at this point that is a unique or even an unusual topic. I am definitely not the first, nor will I be the last, middle-aged “educated, white dude” to lose his job. Or to write about it.
Another thing this blog will be about is travel - about sights seen, cultures observed or absorbed, and experiences of all kinds. Right now, I am about to drive across the US (with my thirteen year-old) son: there will be photos along with a few words about that trip. I love to travel and always have - the travel entries may outnumber all others.
I will also write about a few topics I care about professionally. At a fundamental level, what I care about is World Peace! (Tongue firmly pressed inside cheek: I hope everyone cares about it.) I am particularly passionate about the kind of harmony that results when people of disparate cultures and far-flung geographies work together to create things. Many of the businesses I have been involved in could not have existed in my childhood because of the Cold War. I am really proud of the role these activities have played in burying old hostility. Unfortunately the new ways of doing business have proven disruptive to old patterns and have been lumped together with other changes in the world economy as “globalization.” And we all know that globalization is mostly a negative word in the English language. So I’ll be writing about forms of peaceful collaboration, people working together across old boundaries, and also about the difficulties that adhere to these new practices.
Finally, I love sports: playing them, watching them and talking about them. Not sure if a sports blog goes with the other topics I have described, but I’ll give it a whirl. And somewhere along the line, I’ll explain the title of the blog. No, I’m not training for the NYC Marathon ‘08. This is going to be fun!
